What are the different types of retaining walls?

Gravity Retaining Walls

Gravity retaining walls are used to prevent soil from slipping or running downhill. How do they work? When you have a hill with an incline, the dirt may slide down over time and, eventually, can cause problems like blocked sewers and clogged storm drains. Retaining walls help prevent this from happening. There are different types of retaining walls but the most common type is called a mass wall built with stacked stone or the like, cinder blocks, and other heavy materials.  Gravity retaining walls are used to keep soil in place by preventing it from sliding downhills.

Cantilevered Retaining Walls

Cantilevered Retaining Walls. Cantilevered retaining walls are those that have a beam or similar rigid support cantilevered outward from the side of another structure. Bored Pile Retaining Wall

A bored pile retaining wall is a type of supporting wall that relies on the weight of soil and gravity to resist lateral earth pressure. Bored piles are drilled into the ground with a large diameter (usually 1.2 meters or more), which provides greater length and bearing area than other types of piles. Boring machines can be used for this purpose, but it is also possible to drill by hand using augers or percussive methods. Bored piles give greater resistance to lateral loads than for example posts, which are supported at both ends.  Bored piles are also usually made from concrete or steel pipes; some systems use precast reinforced concrete units (piles) that lock together using bolts, dowels, or clamps in order to save on labor. Bored piles can also be used in conjunction with other retaining structures, such as walls or sloping ground. Bored pile walls have a high capacity for horizontal loads and are often designed so that the wall is subjected only to vertical loads when the ground becomes saturated from heavy rains.

Anchored Retaining Wall

Anchored Retaining Walls can be used to address a variety of issues. Anchored retaining walls are often installed for two reasons: to provide support and create a boundary. Anchored retaining walls come in many different materials, but the most common type is made of concrete or steel pipes that lock together using bolts, dowels, or clamps. Anchored retaining walls are usually installed on slopes with a high capacity for horizontal loads and are often designed so that the wall is subjected only to vertical loads when the ground becomes saturated from heavy rains. Anchors are sometimes required for these types of installations.
